Bird House is a studio offering original Acrylic Paintings and Prints on Canvas
Born at Myilly Point, Darwin the year before Cyclone Tracy blew in, Marnie Jay grew up savouring the laid back, easy lifestyle of the Territory, its outdoor living, multicultural markets, camping ventures and sailing on Darwin harbour. These Territory themes often feature in her artworks.
She completed a degree in design in 1995 with illustration as her major and has been exhibiting annually as a professional artist since 2007. She has had solo and group shows in various Darwin galleries such as Framed, Paul Johnstone Gallery, Museum & Art Gallery of the NT, The Entertainment Centre, DVAA and Tactile Arts. She hosted a Darwin Festival event at Burnett House, Myilly Point, one of her favourite tropical venues. She attends numerous craft fairs throughout the year selling cards and prints of her original paintings. She also conducts kids painting classes.
Marnie’s studio is called “Bird House.” It sits on a rural “Land for Wildlife” property at the edge of a conservation corridor. “There is such a wonderful array of wildlife around to inspire me.” Her love of animals and nature is the driving force behind her work. She translates what she sees, “stripping away the science of subject” into quirky acrylic paintings. As a child she made a pact with herself to always see the magic and wonder in the world and as an adult she aspires to reflect this in her work. The most regular comment she receives from people is that her art “makes me smile.”
